Serving 25

Proud Years

About Mid-Cities SOS

In 1985, twenty-five women from the Mid-Cities, disturbed by domestic violence in Northeast Tarrant County, founded Mid-Cities Supporters of the Shelter, a tax-exempt (501)(C)(3) organization in support of The Women’s Shelter in Arlington.

In February of 2006, The Women’s Shelter and Women’s Haven merged to become SafeHaven of Tarrant County, and our name was changed to Mid-Cities Supporters of SafeHaven.  Our mission remains the same: (1) to educate victims of domestic violence about available refuge and support services; (2) to increase community awareness of domestic violence issues; and (3) to provide volunteer and financial support to SafeHaven.

Beyond the local SOS organization, we take an active role in the parent organization. Our President serves as the liaison to SafeHaven’s Board of Directors, and throughout its 24-year history, SOS members have taken vital positions on the Board of Directors.  In fact, it was an SOS member serving as Chairman of The Women’s Shelter Board in 2004/05 who led the in-depth two-year merger process between The Women’s Shelter and Women’s Haven.  We also provide volunteer hours and funding for SafeHaven’s primary fundraiser, “The Legacy of Women Awards Luncheon,” held during October each year.  We promote and support the HEART card and Very Good Buys (a retail thrift store), two long-standing fund-raisers of the former Women’s Haven.

Financial support of SafeHaven still remains the number one priority of Mid-Cities SOS.  Our present fundraisers include the 2009 18th Annual Tennis Benefit and Celebrity Chefs 2010, a popular event that was introduced in 2007.  You will find up-to-date information about both of these events on our web site.

Since 1985, Mid-Cities SOS has grown in membership to nearly 100, and has provided financial support in excess of  $900,000.  In 2010, the 25th Anniversary of SOS, our goals are to surpass the $1,000,000 mark in total contributions to the shelter and to increase our membership numbers by at least 10%.

The energy and participation of our members, coupled with the support of the community ensures that SafeHaven will be able to provide the necessary support to the women and children who must escape violence at home.
